If you plan on renting a car in Canada and driving with a small child, make sure to take note of the country’s car seat requirements and regulations. If a child is between 20 and 40 pounds, you will need to put them in a car seat that faces forward. If a child weighs less than 80 pounds, has a height that is less than 4 feet, 9 inches, and less than eight years old, they need to be in a booster seat. Any child that is less than 20 pounds needs to be in a car seat that faces the rear. You can always rent a car or booster seat from a car rental company if needed.
It is not uncommon fortravellerss to want to take a road trip from Canada to the United States, as the two countries share a very large border. When you rent a car in Canada, most rental companies will allow you to do this. However, you should always let your rental company know of your plans ahead of time, as they may require you to pay for additional insurance or an extra fee. Also, keep in mind that almost no rental companies allow drivers to rent a car in one country and return it another, so you will likely need to bring the vehicle back to Canada.
Before you leave the rental facility, make sure that your vehicle is equipped with all the perks and amenities that you will need to be comfortable during your stay in Canada. For example, it can often be quite cold in many parts of the country, so you will want to verify that your car’s heating system is working, and that you have chains for your tires in case you need to drive in snow. Much of the country is also rather remote and does not always have the best cell service, particularly for internationaltravellerss, so you may want to add a GPS system to your reservation as well.

I showed up at the counter and was denied the rental because my licence said GDL even though I am out of the program. I under stand that it’s not in the control of the counter Agent however a pop up or notice while renting the card would be extremely helpful especially hen you are being denied a rental when you are already on vacation and have no other arrangements. Absolutely terrible!

Mediocre|Aug 2024
Great vehicle and condition. Issue arose when I advised, a week before the conclusion of the contract, that I would like to change the drop off point to a town further north. The person behind the desk indicated it would mean “changing the whole contract” and got the distinct impression he could not bothered so simply suggested I drop it off at the desired location and pay a penalty for unauthorised drop off… Seemed pretty inefficient and costly. People at the alternate centre were very good on receiving the vehicle but not the best experience overall.

Getting to the rental car area was cumbersome: long walk, then still had to take a shuttle. Rental agreement was in French, but one of the staff spoke good English and was able to help me understand what I was signing.

We rented one car and got a smaller one then drop off which was chosen online was not available on the day we went to drop it off and had no drop box to leave the car. No one was available with the number there to call and the online number from confirmation was no help at all. Thank goodness to the man who runs the garage next door showing up and helped up.
Actual scam. Force you to pay so many extra fees and advertise unlimited km, but that’s only if you’re from out of Provence. Location is inconvenient. Pick up was a nightmare and was an extra hour and a half wait. Ended up refusing the car and cut my losses. They were going to charge me over $130 a day for a car that was advertised as $40. I feared if these were the ridiculous prices up front there could only be more bs charges when I returned which is why I refused the car altogether. Avoid at all costs.

Should I rent a car in Canada?
Renting a car in Canada is essential, particularly if you would like to visit multiple provinces and cities. The larger cities usually have robust public transport systems, like Toronto and Vancouver, but many of the towns in Canada are smaller and rely on cars for transportation. Having access to your own car is also the quickest way to move between big cities, as bus and train options are rather limited. Plus, Canada has many national parks that you may want to visit, such as Banff National Park, and you will need to drive to them as public transportation is not an option.
What is driving like in Canada?
Driving in Canada is usually very straightforward, but there are still a few things you will want to keep in mind. When you are in major cities, like Calgary and Toronto, be prepared to come across traffic in the late mornings and early evenings. You will also find quite a few pedestrians in the downtown areas. When driving in rural areas, like the mountains, the roads may be rather rugged, so always limit your speed and drive as carefully as possible.
How old do you have to be to rent a car in Canada?
To rent a car in Canada, rental companies will require you to be at least 21 years old. They will also ask that you have a minimum of 12 months of driving experience and that your driver’s license has no limitations or negative marks. If you are a United States citizen, you will also need to show your passport or your passport card to receive your car rental.
