Roads in Cancun can vary in quality. While major highways are generally well-maintained, some local roads may have potholes or uneven surfaces. Be cautious, especially during the rainy season, and try to limit your speed when driving over uneven surfaces. In addition, it's common to encounter speed bumps, known as "topes" in Mexico, especially in residential areas and near schools. These speed bumps can be quite pronounced, so be attentive and reduce your speed when approaching them.
When driving in Cancun, you will want to make sure that you always have a bit of cash on you. Mexico has an extensive network of toll roads (cuotas) that are generally well-maintained and provide faster travel between cities. Keep some local currency (Mexican pesos) on hand, as toll booths often do not accept credit cards. Gas stations in Cancun and throughout Mexico may not always accept credit cards, so you will also likely need cash for this.
As you drive in Cancun, you will likely come across some infrastructure that you are not used to. For example, Road signs in Mexico are usually in Spanish, although you may see some signs for major roads or sights that are translated into English as well. It's helpful to have a basic understanding of common Spanish traffic signs in order to make sure that you are driving as safely as possible. Some international symbols are also used, which makes things easier.

We arrived and there was no one available to full fill my reservation as I had to take my business else where Avis pretty much left us stranded at the airport
Price quoted online is not anywhere near what you will pay. They are pushy and confusing and will insist that you must add insurance that is 2-3 times the rate of the rental.
They didn’t respect the reservation and the car was not available at the time of pick up. Terrible experience. We ended up using a different rental car

Mediocre|Apr 2023
The car ended up twice as expensive. It rattled like crazy. The check-in was long and not straightforward. Hidden fees, lots of pushing for extras, and a long wait. I went with a known brand because I had heard negative things about renting a car in Mexico. And for the most part the negatives were true.

Okay|Apr 2023
They gave us a car with the back indicator light not working, luckily we thought to check all lights before leaving lot.. mexico is notorious for pulling cars over, this would have been the perfect excuse. This created an hour delay as they had to get us a different car and new paperwork. Even though we brought our own collision insurance with a letter from our credit car provider, they tacked on a $10 daily charge for a tracking monitor.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. THEY ARE A COMPLETE SCAM. PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM. They extorted nearly $1000 from us for returning the car a few hours late. For context, that is more than we paid for the entire 2 weeks of the rental. They also did not give us the car that we ordered. We ordered a 14 passenger van and they gave us an 11 passenger one. KAYAK should remove them from their site.

Very good|Dec 2025
I was pretty sure that I selected a vehicle that was supposed to be picked up at the terminal and instead they had an employee at the terminal and a shuttle outside of the terminal so there was an inconvenience for us on our trip.

Poor|Nov 2025
A terrible experience. First, they asked me to sign without checking the car. They had one of the doors that didn’t close and we had kids with us. The car was dirty and smelled, I had to put gas a soon as I got the car because it didn’t have any. The service was horrible. They tried to charge me for an extra insurance policy for $500. When I went to return the car they “found some damage” that was on the video and pictures we took when we got the car. They didn’t want us to show all the pictures they had in the file. They went ahead and charged $800 more to my credit card. I’ve brought the issue to my bank because this is fraud!

In some areas, you may encounter street vendors, stray animals, or slow-moving vehicles. Stay alert and drive cautiously to avoid any unexpected obstacles.
