If you’re planning to visit more of Morocco than a single city, renting a car is by far the most flexible and convenient means of getting around. From Marrakech’s historic mosques and gardens to the Sahara desert, there is much to do in this large and diverse country, and having a vehicle at your disposal ensures you’ll have the freedom to explore at your pace and on your schedule. It will also ensure that you have access to more natural and rural areas, like the Ait Ben Haddou and the Ounila Valley or the Valley of Roses, which are not reachable by public transportation.
Driving in Morocco is considered to be generally convenient as most main roads are well-maintained. Even those that are less pristine in the southern part of the country and in the north mountains do not require a specialty or all-terrain vehicle. You will want to take extra caution when driving in bigger cities, such as Marrakech. There is a great deal of vehicle and foot traffic alike, as well as donkeys, camels, pedestrians, and packed moving carts. Also, note that driving becomes more challenging at night, so you may want to stick to daytime traveling whenever possible. Donkeys and oxen are very difficult to see as they travel the roadways after sunset, and remote areas tend to offer little to no streetlights to guide your way.
Most rental companies will require you to be 21 years old and to have been in possession of your license for at least one full year. A passport is also required as proof of identity, and you will need a credit card on hand at the time of booking in order to make a security deposit. Unlike some countries, Morocco does not require that you have an International Driver’s Permit, although we recommend it as a good idea if your license has no photo on it.
