Getting around The Bahamas

Once travellers have arrived on cheap flights to the Bahamas – either at Grand Bahama International Airport or Lynden Pindling International Airport – the fastest way of getting around the islands is by small aircraft. By water, visitors can hop a ride on The Bahamas’ mail boats or yacht.

On dry land, visitors can choose from rental cars (on the bigger islands), taxis or buses (sometimes called jitneys). Bike and scooter rental are also options. Remember to drive on the left – British rules apply.

What is good to know if travelling to The Bahamas?

• Ernest Hemingway found a happy home on Bimini in the 1930s and wrote some of The Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream here. Unfortunately, a fire in 2006 destroyed the hotel he stayed in and all his memorabilia was lost, but the fishing so beloved of Papa is an important and exciting as ever. 
• Pirates of the Caribbean: On Andros, the highest point is called Morgan’s Bluff in honour of Sir Henry Morgan, the Welsh buccaneer. Elizabeth Harbor on Exuma Island was Captain Kidd’s favorite hideaway. It is said that William Catt, the British pirate, buried treasure on Cat Island. Piracy was an equal opportunities venture. Anne Bonny and Mary Read also tried their luck on the high seas, even if they had to disguise themselves as men to do so. 
• Christopher Columbus mapped Long Island and declared it to be “the most delightful island in the world”. This narrow island, 140km long, is beautiful. Cape Santa Maria Beach is considered to be one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. At the island’s northern tip, it is about 15 minutes from Stella Maris, named by Christopher Columbus for one of his ships. 
• Andros is the largest and the least-explored island. The waters that lap against its shores are favoured by scuba divers and snorkellers. It has the third-longest barrier reef in the world and is also said to be the bonefishing capital. 
• Nassau hosts the biggest Junkaroo parade, a Christmastime festival, on December 26 and January 1, The colourful and fascinating street parades start about 1am and keep going until 10am the following day. On Grand Bahama Junkaroo takes place in the summertime.
