A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, beautiful Cinque Terre on Italy’s coast is comprised of five fishing villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The small coastal villages on the eastern ligurian Riviera are situated between La Spezia and Genoa, and the best way to enjoy them is on foot. The area is crisscrossed by miles of trails and pathways, the longest of which links all five villages together. Trains and ferries also link the villages, making it easy to experience the entire area without having to walk or hike the whole time. The villages date back to medieval times, with the oldest, Monterosso, being founded in AD 643.
Olive groves and vineyards are prevalent in the area, meaning wine and olive are not hard to come by and the scenery – from mountains plunging into the sea and terraced cliffs, to the colourful buildings in the villages – is breathtaking. Book ahead in the high season (June to September) to ensure you have a room.
