Have fun in Phoenix with our tips for the seeing the best the city has to offer. Here are six things not to miss when you visit.
Camelback mountain
Located just 20 minutes from downtown Phoenix, Camelback Mountain is a must for anyone who likes to hike. The mountain’s summit is 824 metres above sea level and there are two trails to choose from that get you to the top. These are fairly strenuous hikes, but the scenery along the way and the views from the top are worth the effort.
South Mountain Park and Preserve
At 16,000 acres, South Mountain Park and Preserve is one of the largest parks in the United States with 82 kilometres of primary trails that you can use for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Take a drive up to Dobbins lookout, the highest accessible point in the park at 710 metres, to take in spectacular views.
Desert Botanical Garden
Spread out over 140 acres (55 of which are under cultivation), Desert Botanical Garden is home to more than 50,000 plant displays. There are several thematic trails and exhibits that allow visitors to discover the unique collection of arid-land plants from deserts around the world.
Heard Museum
Founded in 1929, the Heard Museum focuses on Native American art, heritage, culture and history, and is not to be missed. The goal is to educate visitors about American Indian cultures through award-winning exhibits. There are 12 exhibition galleries, featuring both permanent and temporary exhibits. Pottery, fine art, jewellery and textiles are just some of the items you’ll fine here.
First Fridays
If you can time your visit to Phoenix to include the first Friday of the month you can participate in “First Fridays” a lively, art-filled evening where you can tour more than 70 art galleries, venues and other art-related spaces from 6 to 10 p.m. The event is popular for both visitors and locals, and is a great way to get to know downtown Phoenix and the city’s art scene.
Phoenix Art Museum
Head to the Phoenix Art Museum to explore more than 17,000 works of American, Asian, European, Latin American, Western American, modern and contemporary art, and fashion design. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts a broad range of temporary exhibits. There is also an interactive children’s area, photography exhibitions and a landscaped sculpture garden.
